A new flavorful drink spot has recently opened in St. Peter’s. It is the perfect place for anyone who is looking to try a fun new drink, with its wide variety of flavors and drink selection.
A “dirty soda” is a soda base with flavored syrups and creamer, typically half and half, mixed together to make this beverage. Our personal favorites are the Texas Tab and Riptide which are two of their most popular dirty sodas. Sonic and The Soda Fountain both sell dirty sodas as well along with this new franchise.
The Swig building is a wrap-around drive thru with no inside seating. It resembles other places like 7 Brew as they have the same building structure. The journey there can take quite a bit of time, but the drinks make it all worth it.
Senior Ryan George said “the drive to Swig took about 40 minutes.”
The opening of Swig has been highly anticipated around the area, leading to long lines that seem to go on forever. There are 3 other Missouri Swig locations which include Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, and Kansas City. They’re planning on opening more within Missouri, as they continue their national growth and expansion within the state.
The first Swig originated in St.George Utah by the founder Nicole Tanner. Tanner wanted a better way for people, especially busy mothers, to get custom fountain drinks without long waits or contaminated cups from fast-food places. For cultural context, Swig capitalized on the existing niche market in Utah, influenced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ health code (Word of Wisdom), which discourages coffee and tea but allows caffeinated sodas, making custom sodas a popular social treat
Freshman Ellie Ryan has visited Swig.
“The drinks were really good, but I had to wait in line for over an hour,” she said.
Don’t let the long lines scare you away from trying a new fun drink popular with students at South. Swig has lots of different drink options, including refreshers and revivers which is what they call their energy drinks.
“I got the Founder which is basically a dirty soda,” he said.
Beyond the classics, there are fruity drink options as well which are perfect for the spring and summer time.
“I had the Hula Girl. It consisted of Sprite with strawberry, peach, pineapple, and orange,” she said.
For many students, the new Swig has already become a staple in their after-school routine.
“It’s honestly the new spot,” said Reilly, who visited close to the opening day. “Everyone was talking about it, so we had to check it out.”
Social media played a huge role in drawing students to the new location. The online buzz helped create a sense of excitement even before students even tried it, turning the shop into a must visit spot during its first week.
“Everyone was already posting their drinks on Snapchat, so I had to go see what the hype was about,” said freshman Ellie Ryan
The impressive variety of drinks is another pull factor for the restaurant. The menu offers hundreds of different drink combinations. The drinks range from $1.50-$5.00 depending on the type of drink you get.
“I’m not even a big soda person, but the mixes are actually really good,” said George.
The buzz doesn’t seem to just be a trend.
“I feel like it’s going to stay popular,” Ryan said. “It gives people somewhere fun to go, and it’s different from the usual spots around here.”
With strong first impressions and plenty of chatter throughout school, Swig seems to have landed exactly where students wanted it. If the lines after school go down a little, the drink shop may be on its way to becoming a permanent part of student life.
