Despite dealing with poor weather conditions and the cancellation of the entire first round, seniors Matthew Delanty and Tristan Jones were still able to place at state, with Delanty tying for 3rd and Jones placing 23rd.
Coach Thomas Williams said he was proud of his players for overcoming the conditions.
“It was special to have two golfers qualify from the toughest district in the state. Tristan came into the end of the year not playing his best golf, but when it mattered, he put together the two best rounds of the year. Tristan never gave up and kept grinding, and it paid off. Matthew had a lot of pressure to make it back to state, and he showed tremendous character to make it to state when he didn’t have his best stuff that day,“ Williams said.
One highlight of Delanty’s round happened in the 8th hole when he holed out an 80-yard shot for an Eagle.
Jones also talked about a highlight of his match.
“I was about halfway through my round, not playing the best, but certainly not the worst, when Coach Stevens helped me clear my mind by telling me that I had nothing left to lose. Next shot, I ended up hitting the flagstick from 85 yards and having my first birdie of the day,” said Jones
The weather also played a big factor in their performances, with the conditions being so bad that they had to cancel the first round.
“We waited all day Monday to see if we could get the round in, and they finally canceled Monday. The forecast for Tuesday was not good, so we were afraid we might not be able to play. After multiple delays, we were able to get the round started on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.,” said Williams
Delanty also shared his experiences with the weather.
“The weather had a huge impact, with us having to cancel the whole first day. It made it a lot more intense with us only having one day to play our best on a wet course,” said Delanty
Delanty and Jones also had a big impact as role models for the team, according to Williams.
“Matthew and Tristan both are great teammates and leaders in our program. Both played every tournament for four years and set the example of how to prepare and compete for the other golfers in the program. Not only are they great players, but even better teammates. They have put Parkway South back on the map, helping us win Conference this year,” said Williams.
Both boys are receiving scholarships and continuing their golfing careers at McKendree University together. They shared their thoughts on how they feel.
“I feel great. I’m excited to see what I can do against some really good players and very excited to be able to play with Tristan for a few more years,” said Delanty.
Jones also said he’s excited to be playing together again with Delanty.
“Obviously, playing at the college level is an exciting opportunity, and I’m even more excited that it’s with one of my best friends and teammates for the last four years,” said Jones
