Wanting something simple to pick up for breakfast before a long school day? Well, donuts bring happiness to every bite.
There are many different places you can go to get your morning pastries in the St. Louis area. This may be a classic chain restaurant like Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’. But many aren’t aware of the wild fun flavors you can get at local donut places like Duck Donuts, Schnucks and Mochiatsu. We are going to sample these donuts for you, so you don’t have to waste your time and money.
Duck Donuts–1651 Clarkson Road, Chesterfield is a favorite local donut shop by many with dozens of different unique flavors. The shop uses the same vanilla batter for all the donuts which can be seen as basic but because of the creative toppings this causes the donuts to stand out. The only thing some may see as a problem is the small sizes of the donuts. But this makes room for you to try more flavors. A unique thing about these donuts is that they are fried in a soy-based shortening and are made daily right in front of you.
The maple bacon donut has a sweet smooth maple icing, paired with the salty crunchy bacon on a soft chewy donut is the perfect combination if you are looking for a delicious fall breakfast donut.
The classic glazed donut, simple, yet essential, was perfect. The donut was soft and the icing added the perfect amount of sweetness to make the donut delectable.
According to their website, another popular donut is the chocolate-covered strawberry. This donut is made with a vanilla batter with strawberry frosting and a chocolate drizzle. The chocolate strawberry donut was very good, but it lacked some of the strawberry flavors, otherwise, this donut was great and can be greatly compared with an actual chocolate-covered strawberry.
Overall the presentation was excellent as well as the taste. Duck Donuts is a solid 9.5/10.
Schnucks (multiple locations) bakery is a quick, cheap, efficient place to buy delicious donuts. Unlike other bakeries that close after breakfast, Schnucks bakery is always open during store hours.
Although there aren’t fun toppings and flavors like Mochi donuts and Duck Donuts, Schnucks is a place where you can get simple donuts. These doughy donuts are cheap, costing 99 cents.
First, the classic glazed donut is gooey and a warm treat for anytime. The long white iced long john competes with the long chocolate-covered donut. Both are very good and simple. The white batter for every donut makes them go together well. Last we tried the cinnamon roll donut. This is not to be mistaken for a cinnamon roll, but this is a donut with cinnamon frosting.
These donuts sit in a glass case all day but are made fresh every morning. The Schnucks bakers work hard to produce these donuts in a mass amount every day.
Overall these donuts are great if you are wanting a sweet simple donut. We rated Schnucks a 8/10 based only on the simplicity and the price.
Mochiatsu-14248 Manchester Rd has a very interesting selection of donuts–you either love them, or hate them. For people who have never had this type of donut, they have a chewy texture that is very different from your normal, everyday donut. Nonetheless, all these flavors are very appetizing and make up for the strange texture.
The s’mores donut had a delicious rich chocolate icing, and thick fluffy marshmallows. The chocolate and marshmallow perfectly complement each other, elevating the donut to another level.
The strawberry shortcake donut is perfect if you’re craving something sweet. The clash of strawberry and sweet vanilla donut is a great combination. These donuts are perfect for a cool spring morning, and are the perfect start for a good day.
Finally the most popular donut, glazed, had a great consistency and tasted delectable. The donut was strong in flavor, and had a perfect thin sweet glaze. It´s appearance looked scrumptious as well with each ring coated in the delicious sweet glaze.
Overall, these donuts are perfect if you want to try something a little different. We had different ratings on these unfortunately. Isla rated them a 8//10, whereas Meredith rated them a 5/10.
You can get donuts at many different places in the St. Louis area. Next time you are craving a sweet treat go stop by Schnucks, Duck Donuts or Mochiatsu and try these amazing flavors.
