Howdy South!

This year’s winter dance took on a wild west approach to its theme and was a hit among South students.

Instead of the typical snowflake theme to the winter dance, South decided to do a “Hoedown” or western theme. There were many horseshoes, hay bales, and hats around the Commons.

This dance had a more casual feel to it according to sophomore Hannah Truesdale.

“I didn’t get super dressed up, and I don’t like wearing dresses so I enjoyed that,” she said.

Most people attended the pink boys’ basketball game before the dance.  The theme of this game was to raise breast cancer awareness and during halftime of this game, the cheerleaders went around the stands with a bin to collect money for breast cancer.  Even though the theme of the game was pink, South students still prepped themselves for the dance and wore flannel, boots, and jean shorts amongst the pink theme.

The playlist of the dance consisted of old country that everyone knows and a couple of newbies that our true country fans sang word for word.

The junior class representatives, Kyle Delanty, Carter Lewandowski and Grace Fu, came up with the idea for this year’s winter dance.

Fu said she thought the event was a success.

“I loved the Cupid Shuffle because it was super fun and interactive. My friends and I love to dance to that song,” she said.

Tickets for the dance were $15 each, and guests from other schools were allowed. School dances at South help to fund other fun events and pay for things like DJs and decorations for future dances. According to the bookstore, about 150 students purchased tickets to the Hoedown.

South students got into some line dancing and sang Cotton-Eyed Joe to a T. In the past, it has been a somewhat struggle to get attendance at the winter dance, but because it has taken a new casual side, the dance is looking up.

There is no word yet for what the theme of next year will be, but since the new approach to the theme this year, South can expect more unique and ever-changing themes in the future.
