The Parkway South Patriots ice hockey team is seeking revenge tonight as they play the Parkway Central Colts for the second time this season.
Although they lost, senior forward Colin Walters thought it was a good competitive opportunity for the team.
“We had our first competitive game against Central, and it was competitive hockey,” Walters said.
With returning players and new additions combining their efforts, the team is working to find consistency and confidence on the ice, according to sophomore forward Will Garthe.
“It’s looking really good, like we’re moving the puck well, and all that stuff. I’m just hoping to help the team get better and do whatever I can to get us there,” said Garthe.
One of the biggest changes this season comes behind the bench, as the Patriots welcome a new head coach, Stephen Herbel. Players say the transition has gone smoothly, and the team is responding well to new leadership.
“We have a new head coach this year, and it’s been good. The team is connecting very well. Teddy Bauer is a good one. Great teammate, a good leader, and he’s been one of my biggest motivators personally,” said Walters.
Chemistry continues to be a big factor, with players pushing each other to improve every day. Along with returning players, newcomers are also stepping up and finding their place within the squad.
“It hasn’t been bad, the boys have been welcoming and kind,” said Freshman goalie Ally Barzak.
Despite not being a freshman and one of two girls on the team, Barzak is still determined to contribute to the team.
“Just getting better each day and focusing on our techniques. To get better at hockey and hopefully make an impact on the team,” said Barzak.
Putting the beginning of the season behind them, the Patriots are continuing to build chemistry and adjust to their new coach’s style. The team aims to turn their hard work into wins in the weeks ahead.
“I’ve grown up in the Parkway school district, and have always watched Parkway South hockey games, so it’s a special part of my life,” Garthe said.
