Fall is around the corner, and last seasons’ undefeated district and conference champions field hockey team is back. This time around, the Patriots are headlined with a new coach, Dory Smith,  and five senior leaders.

The main difference from last year’s district champions is a change in management. Coach Smith will be coaching the varsity team in her first year at south, and she said she is excited for the season.

“The main challenge from taking over this team was the late hiring. I would have really liked to practice more with the girls over the summer, however we are still making great strides towards the start of our season,” said Smith.

After last season’s conference and district titles, Coach Smith said she would like the return of as successful habit.

“Our goals for the varsity team is to be tough mentally and physically, and of course to have another winning season. We would like to build on the accomplishments from last year, and repeat in conference and districts,” said Smith.

“As for JV team, our biggest goal is to improve our communication,” said Smith.

A key returning leader to the team this year is senior Sarah Stock. She said she is excited about getting back on the field, and she also thinks the team can accomplish a lot.

“I’m excited to see our team work together as a unit effectively this year. This year we brought to the table a very powerful offense and defense, which hasn’t been the case in previous years. This is a very powerful team that will work well together. Also, I think we can beat our record of 14-10 last year, and possibly go undefeated in districts again. That is all of the girls’ goal,” said Stock.

Another returning senior to the team, Lauren Maurutto is also very optimistic and excited for the season.

“I’m excited to work really hard with the girls this year to win games, and I think this team will work well together. I think we can improve from this already talented squad, and be successful,”said Maurutto.

As the season begins, be on the lookout for this year’s Patriot Field Hockey team. The girls are ready to build on last year’s conference and districts accomplishments, and go farther in 2015.
