South High’s basketball program often refers to itself as a family, but for the Davis siblings, that phrase holds a much deeper meaning.
Junior twins Josiah and Luca Davis, along with their younger sister, freshman Lael Davis, aren’t just a part of the South basketball family on the court, they also live it every day at home.
Basketball has been a shared part of their lives for as long as they can remember. All three siblings began playing the sport around age 10 and recall their earliest memories very fondly.
“Our first memory was when we lived in Troy and played recreational basketball. It was fun to play together,” said Luca.
These memories aren’t limited to just the brothers. Lael also developed her own passion for basketball at a young age.
“I think my first memory of playing was when I was 10 on my old team, the Knights. It was super fun,” Lael said.
With all three siblings playing the same sport, it would be easy to assume that basketball runs deep in the family. Surprisingly, that wasn’t the case. Instead, their love for the game began in a much simpler way–playing in their neighbor’s driveway. While Lael naturally looked up to her older brothers, it was those neighborhood games that truly sparked the trio’s passion.
That shared beginning helped create a strong bond between the siblings, one that extends beyond games and practices. They constantly push one another to improve, both on and off the court, holding each other accountable in ways only siblings can.
“We train together and try and work out with each other as much as possible. We are always trying to get better,” said Josiah.
Of course, their motivation doesn’t come without a little competition. Their effort to better each other is not always without some rivalry between them, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.
“We are all pretty competitive, and sometimes we can get into little arguments. Other than that, we all love playing the same sport,” said Lael.
This season, the Davis siblings have each contributed to their respective teams. The girls’ varsity team currently holds a 6-7 record after starting the season strong by winning the Parkway Quad. Despite only being a freshman, Lael is playing point guard and contributing to the varsity Patriots this season, scoring 46 points so far.
The boys’team began the season a little shaky with a 0-4 start, but they are on the come up and currently sit at a 9-10 record. Josiah has been an 80% free-throw shooter this season and Luca has 47 points in 18 games.
With all 3 siblings sharing the same school, the same sport, and the same passion, basketball has become more than just a game. They have developed a bond similar to one of teammates, but theirs is strengthened by family love. In fact, the Davis’ wear No. 1, 2 and 3 on the back of their jerseys.
¨Playing together really connects us and is something that we can always relate to,” said Luca Davis.
