As the Patriot girls varsity basketball team hits the court this season they started off strong.
In the Parkway Tip-Off Tournament they showcased resilience, teamwork, and a sharpened competitive edge. Players say this was most seen in their matchup against Parkway North–one of the toughest games of the match.
“We played the best at North, and they are one of the harder teams, so it means more to us,” said junior Ella Sloey.
Several teammates echoed that North was the most challenging opponent they faced in this tournament–noting the team’s height, athleticism, and a standout scorer averaging 15 points per game.
But this didn’t stop the Patriots. It took time and dedication to prepare for this tough game and they seemed to do everything right. To these girls it’s not just about skill but strategy.
“We watch film the day before and scout sheets about other players,” said junior Carrie Naeger.
Despite the hard-fought games, the Patriots found momentum and remained on top. One of the biggest moments of the season came when South defeated West for the first time in three years.
“We were excited, because we haven’t beaten West in three years,” said junior Gabby Bonge.
While Naeger summed up the team mentality simply:
“Revenge was our team mindset,” she said.
That competitive energy effortlessly carried the Patriots through the Parkway Tournament, where the team walked away champions.
“We were excited,” Sloey said.
Looking ahead, coaches say the next step is to increase intensity and get healthy.
“We need to get healthy, and increase defensive intensity. Making sure practices address the needs of the team and making practice intense so games feel easier,” Assistant Coach Michelle Dempsey said.
Statistically, Bonge leads the team offensively. Bonge is currently averaging 13 points per game. Defensively, Naeger is averaging 7 rebounds per game.
Unfortunately the Patriots’ undefeated season ended on Tuesday with a loss to Lafayette.
