New year, new record!
Junior Guard Adam Sommer sinks 42 points, 8 3-pointers in win over Ritenour
Over 20 years ago a basketball record for most points in a game by a South player was set by Kris Kean, and since then, that record has stood up until Jan. 8 of 2019, when junior Adam Sommer took the court.
South defeated Ritenour 83-67 that day. Sommer scored 42 of the team’s 83 points, breaking Kean’s record of 40.
“I felt good going into the game. In warmups the rim just seemed big to me and that mindset carried in,” Sommer said.
Sommer knocked down two 3’s to begin the game, getting to a hot start. Those three’s carried on, knocking down 8 in the entire game, which tied the school record for most three pointers by a player in a single game.
Sommer said no one in the gym knew he was close to breaking a record because there was no scoreboard showing individual points. Head Coach Matt Roach said he wasn’t even aware how close he was,
“We had no idea about the record. We just wanted to win,” said Roach. “I didn’t even think about it until we got on the bus and saw the scorebook.”
In the last minutes of the game, Sommer went to the free-throw line to sink down the final record-breaking points.
After the game, Roach went to privately tell Sommer of his achievement before tweeting it out,
“It took me by surprise, I wasn’t really aware of how close I was. It’s a really cool thing to do to break a school, I hope I can try to accomplish more in the future,” Sommer said.
