On Saturday Patriot fans have the unique opportunity to travel to Columbia to see the boys basketball team tip off against the Hickman Kewpies. The game starts at 6:20 p.m. at the Mizzou Arena. At press time, Hickman’s record is 2-14, while South’s current record is 7-6. No individual statistics were available for Hickman, but as a team they have a lot of height. Hickman’s center #24, Jonathan Richmond, is 6’6, 258 lbs and power forward #35, Leland Harvey is 6’7, 205 lbs.

The Mizzou Arena holds up to 15,061 people and will expect to be packed full of energy. Students were allowed to sign up to be able to ride down with the team on the pep bus. Those who made the sign-up for the bus ride to the game will receive a customized t-shirt, game ticket, and roundtrip transportation for $25.

“Tickets for individuals wishing to travel on their own will go on sale Tuesday, January 16th at the cost of $8 per person. It is good for all of the games that day in the MFA Oil Shootout,” said the athletic director, Pat Burns.

This year the Patriots have been lead by new head coach, Matt Roach. Roach has been seen as the source for the team’s wise leadership and determination. Roach is seen to have a positive mindset heading into saturday’s game.

“I believe the biggest challenge we will face will be the energy and excitement we will have playing at Mizzou Arena. When you have the excitement of the big stage, it can lead to people doing things out of their ability. If we can control the emotions and do what we do best, we will be ok,” said Head Coach Matt Roach.

Players who are expected to play in the game said they are also having a mentally preparing week on and off the court.

“Our team is very confident with how we’ve been playing games lately. We expect to come away with a well-fought win. We’re taking it one game at a time,” said senior center Jack Mullen.

It’s safe to say that energy is a big factor heading into this upcoming game. With a take on the athletic director and coaches input, the students mentality toward the game is positive as well. Members of Parkway South’s spirit group known as the “Patriot Posse” are expected to make an appearance at the game.

“I will try and be a constant distraction toward Hickman High School and do my best to lead chants supporting the Patriots,” said co-leader of the Patriot Posse, Andrew Fyffe.

This opportunity is not only a huge impact on the students but the impact is also positive for the administration. The goal for this game is to also show who we are as a school.

“Getting the opportunity to play at Mizzou Arena is a great opportunity for our kids. It will give them a chance to showcase their skills in an SEC arena. Very few kids get to do this. This event has teams from across the state so it gets our name out there in other areas of the state where South may not be known,” said Burns.

With all of the pressure being put on the players, the real impact is about showcasing who we are as a school. Hopes are in South’s favor as head coach, Matt Roach, leads the team’s mentality.

“Anything can happen in high school basketball, but I believe if we play the way we are capable of playing, we will come out on top. Hickman has a few guys that can hurt you if you do not play strong defense, but if we control the tempo and play strong defense, I like our chances. The team is super excited to play on the same court Mizzou plays on and it will be a great experience we all will remember!  Come out to Mizzou and support the Patriots….and get some Shakespeare’s Pizza!” Roach said.
