The newest puppet in town

Sesame Street is one of the most popular preschool TV show in American history. It has been on air now for 48 years and is still continuing. They first went on the air November 10, 1969. It has taught children  many life lessons like how friends come in all shapes and sizes and how to learn from mistakes. Now, there is a new chick on the block who will show that just because she acts a little different doesn’t mean she is a bad person. On April 10, 2017 Sesame Street introduced a girl named Julia who is a four-year-old muppet with autism. This is great for kids, and it will teach them important information about what autism is.

So what exactly is autism? It is a mental condition that makes it difficult for a person to communicate and to form relationships with other people. The average age of seeing symptoms of autism is around four year olds. One in 68 children have autism. To take care autistic child, it would cost a family $60,000 a year. Boys are nearly five times more likely to get diagnosed with autism than girls are. Thirty five percent of young adults between the ages of nineteen and 23 with autism have not had a job or received education after leaving high school. Autism is not the same for every child. Julia’s autism is different from any other kids disability because it’s all different for everyone.

Some people may think that this autistic character could be offensive to people with autism. I think that Sesame Street is not going to mock a person with a disability in front of three year olds. This character is trying to tell children that just because we act differently doesn’t mean we are a bad person. Sesame street has covered lots of different topics. Some of the topics included are racism, incarceration, divorce and believe it or not HIV and AIDS. Covering these different topics will teach kids why some of these topics are important and why we should know about them. Sesame Street  has also covered the incident of 9/11, they talked about how to deal with a traumatizing situation.

In conclusion, Sesame Street has a new muppet in town named Julia who has autism. She may act different from everyone else but she is still the same as everyone else. This goes along great with all of the lessons that have been learned throughout the years of Sesame Street. Children with autism should be treated the same as everyone else. This will be a great thing for kids to know about and to learn from and who they look up to.Sesame Street has been helping kids with learning new things everyday. I think that this is a wonderful thing.
