Prom season has officially ended and the countdown to summer has begun.
The endless planning and stress surrounding the night finally paid off and resulted in exciting memories, music, and celebration. While the evening took an unfortunate turn due to the endless rain and wind, Prom managed to continue nevertheless.
This year’s Prom was held at the Marriott St. Louis West on May 3, and all South juniors and seniors were able to attend. The theme, “Black and White Ball” created a stylish and chic atmosphere with remarkable decor that the planning committee worked extremely hard on. Organizers put in endless hours to ensure that the venue would transport students into a world of elegance and glamour.
As guests entered the room, tables were scattered around for seating, backdrops provided the perfect photo ops, and a variety of refreshments were available. Guests had access to a number of different snacks and beverages; these included toasted ravioli, pizza, chicken strips, nachos, dessert, and soft drinks.
“I really liked how we set up the buffet. It was constantly filled and the food was easy to eat,” said Spanish teacher Rachel Dunaway.
Everyone had the opportunity to enjoy their favorite foods, drinks, and share with their friends. The room was fiercely decorated with everything guests could need, including a complimentary photo station to capture all the fun memories and elevate the Prom experience.
“I took a few pictures and I thought the decorations were really cute and looked good,” said junior Alexa Arce.
One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s Prom was the outfits, as students wore their best attire and showcased their personal style. For many, this meant spending time trying on extravagant dresses that ranged from simple and sophisticated to ones that sparkled and shined. Some guests even chose to match the theme, wearing black or white tuxedos and long gowns. Students also took into consideration what their dates or friends were wearing, hoping to match and complement each other. For those who wore tuxedos, a classic black tux was a timeless and popular choice.
“My tux was black and I wore a white shirt underneath, but my tie was turquoise blue to match my date,” said junior Corwin Plank.
However, the issue of the rainy weather created some chaos for those planning on taking pictures before the dance. Many students had to quickly change their plans or take pictures indoors to avoid the continuous rain. Prom took place regardless and ended up being an enjoyable night. For South’s foreign exchange students, this was a completely new experience.
“We never had dances like this in Germany. I really enjoyed the music and it was cool to see everyone wearing suits and be all dressed up,” said junior Cayan Kara.
Of course, no Prom could be complete without a king and queen. Students received an email prior to the event to vote for those running for prom court. At around 8 p.m., the results were announced and the official 2025 winners were seniors Libby Schellman and Cole Carlton. Unfortunately, the majority of people started leaving after prom court was announced, only staying until 8:30 or 9:00 p.m.
“I decided to run for Prom to have one last fun thing in high school to look forward to, and to make my senior prom even more eventful. Prom was such a fun night because everyone got to dance and come together one last time as a grade before our last week of school,” said Schellman.
