Many people around South High talk about the “voice behind the announcements.” This well-known voice belongs to sophomore Ben Besic.
Besic’s voice is unmistakable for how deep it is. Although he’s only 15, he sounds like he could be a 45-year-old man. Besic talked about what it’s like going through his day with a voice so deep.
“Sometimes when I just want to have a regular human conversation, people just want to bring it up. But it’s not necessarily a bad thing,” Besic said. “One time I was at the mall shopping at one of my favorite stores, I only talked once and she looked at me like I had just arrived on another planet.”
Besic’s genes are to thank for his deep voice and weird looks.
“My dad does have a deep voice, but mine is deeper,” He said.
Besic’s voice makes him stand out, considering it’s significantly lower than other boys his age, and even many adult men. Broadcast and Production teacher Michael Hachmesiter had Besic as a student and allowed him to do announcements after he heard his voice, and was stunned.
“The students do audio assignments the first 6 weeks of the semester and from his recordings, it sounded like his voice would work well for doing the announcements,” Hachmesiter said.
It’s no surprise that Besic’s voice catches people’s attention, especially students like senior Bella Boewer. She talked about her first reaction upon hearing his voice.
“Holy cow, he has a deep voice!” she said.
Besic is not only catching the attention of students. Taylor Hawkins, South’s choir teacher, has also noticed Besic, and has even shown interest in recruiting him into the school’s Advanced Chamber Choir.
“I’ve always wanted to hit those low notes. I would love to have a manlier voice,” Hawkins jokes. “I hope he joins choir!”
Hawkins commented on what Besic’s voice reminded him of.
“Ben is a voice actor who could do all of the evil people or even like an oak tree. He has a very earthy voice. He’s got a presence about him and his voice. He is definitely a true bass,” Hawkins said.
As mentioned, Besic has taken the Broadcasting and Production class. An assignment in the class consists of researching topics, creating a script, and recording yourself speaking about them. He has also voiced Gabriel from Ultrakill for commissions.
“Commissions are when people provide a character for me to voice act and give me money to do so,” Besic explained.
“Voice acting has made me a tad bit famous and also a lot more comfortable speaking in public and making my voice heard,” Besic said.
As his popularity grows, Besic continues to shock everyone who hears him. As some might not have known his name, they will now.
“Oh, absolutely not. I have no clue who it is,” Boewer said.
Well, now you know!
