A new event came to South today, and it was a big HIT!
South has had a student vs faculty basketball game for years, but this year the school added a student vs faculty volleyball game.
Today, during ac. lab, there was a faceoff between students and faculty to see who could hit it and who could shank it. Some say the students were going to win, and some rooted for the teachers. In the end the teachers won the game 2 sets to 3.
Varsity setter and junior Caden Rushing expresses his disappointment about the boys volleyball team not being able to participate, due to being in season, but comes up with a solution to his problems.
“I think they should switch when they do the basketball and volleyball games, so that the boys teams can play,” Rushing says.
Either way, Rushing still attended the game and even served as a referee. Rushing also wanted to be at the game to support the girls volleyball players who played on the student team, since he is the team manager.
Sophomore Class President Emilly Lima shared her thoughts on this new event.
“I think this is just something fun to do, because we hardly have fun events, except for the student vs faculty basketball game and maybe one other event, so we’re just trying to bring more fun stuff to South, and I hope everyone will come and have fun!” Lima said.
This new event not only helped bring more fun events to South, but it also raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Each ticket cost $1 and all proceeds went toward the Make-A-Wish Foundation, so not only was it a good game, but it went to a good cause.
Sophomore Secretary Mohammad Barakat also gave his thoughts on the volleyball game.
“Honestly, it’s a pretty good idea, and I think I would go and enjoy it, especially because all the funding is going to Make-A-Wish,” he said.
Senior volleyball player Charlotte Murray played in the game, and that might even be the last time she ever plays volleyball here at South High.
“I feel like this event will not only be fun and exciting, but meaningful, because it’ll probably be the last game I’ll ever play here at South, so this opportunity, to play for my school again, is an honor, and I hope people show up to support all the senior volleyball players on their last game here at South,” Murray said.
