Spring football is right around the corner!
The St. Louis Battlehawks are back in action tomorrow at the Houston Roughnecks. For the first time in their three-season history, they will play six home games instead of the league-wide five. St. Louis fans, some of the most dedicated in the UFL, will play a major role once again. Students at Parkway South are especially eager to attend games and show their support to the team.
“I definitely plan on going to more games this season. Each game is a different and more exciting experience!” said sophomore Bri Clifton.
The new season means new changes for players and coaches as well. Since the start of spring football, A.J. McCarron has been the face of the Battlehawks. He has been their starting quarterback for the past 2 seasons, leading them to a 7-3 record both times. He threw a combined 3,732 yards and 39 touchdowns. Following the 2023-2024 season, the Battlehawks decided to release McCarron.
“I feel like he should have been given a heads-up beforehand and the whole process could have been executed better. However, I’m sure they did it in order to help the team grow in this upcoming season.” says Clifton.
Although fans may be disappointed with the departure of McCarron, three new quarterbacks have been getting recent attention from coaches, including Cheaven Cordeiro, Max Duggan, and Manny Wilkins. These players have managed to step up to the plate, and head coach Anthony Becht believes that each of them have the ability to help the Battlehawks with another successful season.
Becht returns for his third consecutive season as head coach. He has proven himself to be a strong leader who’s willing to push his team to success. After achieving two successful past seasons, Becht is hopeful to continue the team’s winning record and further improve.
The Battlehawks play at one of the most electric venues in the league, The Dome at America’s Center. This makes it a tough place for their opponents to play in, but also a thrilling stadium for fans to enjoy each game.
“The games are super cool to watch at the Dome and the atmosphere is always fun,” says junior Kate Cowan.
While each UFL team brings the competition, the Battlehawks are confident that they will dominate once again, drawing in large crowds and bringing home wins. Fans can’t deny that the Battlehawks prove to create excitement and energy around St. Louis, including a community of supporters that enjoys the semi-newly created football team.
“I’m super excited for them to be back in action, and I can’t wait to see what the season brings!” says Clifton.
