The Super Bowl this year was more than just a game, but was an emotional rollercoaster for fans all over the country. Super Bowl LIX was a highly anticipated rematch that led to very unexpected moments and memories, making this one of the most exciting days of the year for many people.
This Super Bowl brought out a range of emotions from the students at Parkway South. Whether these people rooted for the Chiefs or the Eagles, these fans had many things to say about this game and their overall experience watching this exciting Match-up.
Super Bowl LIX (59) was played this Sunday in New Orleans where both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles faced off against each other. This was a rematch from Super Bowl 57 just two years ago where the Eagles were looking to get their revenge after losing in 2023 with a final score of 38-35. But this year’s game was different, many were surprised with the outcome as the Eagles took down the Chiefs with ease, with a final score of 40-22.
Before this game started, most predictions were way off as many were expecting this to be a very close competition.
“I thought the Chiefs would win without a doubt before it even started, but I thought it would be at least a one-score game,” senior Kyle Huelsmann said.
A very important player for the Chiefs was quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Many Chiefs fans had expected much more out of Mahomes with his performance in this game, which led many fans to put the blame on Mahomes for this big loss. Some reporters explained how this was one of the worst games played by a team in Super Bowl history, which students at South also agreed with.
“I was really upset with the offense in general, they couldn’t let Patrick Mahomes play like he normally does,” Huelsmann said.
But Huelsmann’s not alone with his frustration, as another Chiefs fan, junior Hannah Truesdell wasn’t happy about the disappointing performance from Kansas City. Truesdell has been a big Chiefs supporter and had a lot to say about this game.
“I actually had a lot of confidence in the Chiefs before the game and expected it to be close. I think most Chiefs fans can agree with that as well,” Truesdell said.
Truesdell even thinks Mahomes needed to step up his game as she thinks he is the main reason for this loss, which is a common theme among all Chiefs fans who watched the Super Bowl. Even though Mahomes put up 257 passing yards and three touchdowns, it wasn’t enough to satisfy this Chiefs fanbase. This could be from Mahomes having two interceptions, one fumble, and getting sacked in the pocket all game long.
“I believe Mahomes was the main reason for the loss; he really underperformed and he even admitted to that after the game,” Truesdell said.
But despite the disappointment of these Chiefs fans, they seem to be hopeful for the future of this team.
“I think the Chiefs will bounce back from this with their good coaches and owners and the decisions they will make in the offseason,” Huelsmann said.
Truesdell also explains her high hopes for Kansas City’s future.
“I think this tough loss will give them a good spark to return and win it next year. And knowing what Mahomes is like, this will give him even more motivation to be back next year,” she said.
But on the other hand, Eagles fans couldn’t be more excited as the Eagles took down the Chiefs easily, which wasn’t expected. Philidelphia fans at South are very happy with the outcome and have been celebrating this win this past week.
Although they had a lot of excitement, they weren’t expecting it to be as easy of a battle as an Eagles fan, Lance Roethlisberger explains.
“I thought it would be a much closer game than it was. I was expecting it to go to overtime. My predictions before this game were way off,” he said.
Obviously, many students were happy with how the Eagles played this year and especially how they showed up in the Super Bowl. A key player in this game was the quarterback, Jalen Hurts. Jalen Hurts has been seemingly underrated going into this game and he really proved that he has what it takes to perform at his best when needed. Jalen Hurts ended the game with 72 rushing yards, 221 passing yards, and two touchdowns.
“I was happy with how Jalen Hurts played. I didn’t think he would pass the ball as well as he did, but he definitely proved me wrong,” Roethlisberger said.
With the outcome of this game, it brought out lots of excitement for the Philidelphia fans and pure shock. This game was expected to be much closer which is why it left the Eagle fans in disbelief.
“I was just extremely excited for the Eagles to win. I didn’t know how to react or control myself after the big win,” Roethlisberger said.
Not only did these students at South have lots of opinions about this game, but South’s athletic director, Matt Roach, who is a big Chiefs fan also had some strong opinions about the Chiefs’ performance.
“The first half was literally the worst football half in the past seven years,” Roach said.
Roach strongly believes that the Chiefs offensive line was a major reason for the loss.
“I was surprised their defensive line was getting pressure with just four guys and zero blitzing. We have a solid offensive line so that surprised me,” he said.
Overall, regardless of which team they supported, everyone seemed to be in pure shock after what they saw in this Super Bowl.
But besides the actual game being played, a common topic that was brought up by all of these fans was the halftime show, performed by Kendrick Lamar. There were all sorts of different reactions to the halftime show from fans of either team.
“The halftime show was overall just mid. I expected much more out of Kendrick Lamar and wanted to see more,” Huelsmann said.
Eagles fan, Lance Roethlisberger, agreed with Huelsmann,
“The halftime show was disappointing. I guess I was just expecting a lot more of a performance from him,” Huelsmann said.
But some of these fans thought directly opposite, as some people thought it was fun and exciting to watch. This was also the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show in NFL history as over 133 million viewers tuned in to watch the show.
“It was entertaining, even though I am not a Kendrick Lamar fan. But overall, I have to say it was fun,” Roach said.
Similarly, Chiefs fan Truesdell thought the same,
“I thought the halftime show was better than what most people say about it. It wasn’t all that bad since I wasn’t sure what songs he was going to perform,” she said.
But as Super Bowl LIX is officially over, it left fans reflecting on this game, either in excitement or disappointment. But everyone can agree on one thing, which is the fact that they are all excited to see what next year has to bring for the NFL as the offseason has begun.
“I’m ready for what these teams can do next year and how they will reflect and improve on from this Super Bowl,” Huelsmann said.
