Everybody jumps with excitement when the word “field trip” is spoken.
Teachers and students alike all rush to prepare for an experience filled with adventure and wonder, with the underlying purpose of learning.
Here at South, one of the trips that Fashion Apparel and Housing Design students have the opportunity to go on is the fashion trip to Chicago. Students who wanted to go on the trip paid $600.
“I take my students to Downtown Chicago to experience the city and city life,” said FACS teacher Ashley Winslow.
While on the trip, Winslow keeps her students busy by planning multiple activities for them to do.
“Students get to experience seeing multiple Chicago attractions such as Chicago 360, Navy Pier, boujee food, a private tour of Driehaus Museum, see super old houses, tour to Columbia College, Millennium Park to see Cloudgate, the Chicago History Museum, Milwaukee Avenue thrift store, and vintage store shopping,” Winslow said.
The fashion field trip is not the only overnight experience South provides; another fan favorite is the New York Trip DECA students have the chance to attend.
“It was an amazing experience,” said junior Emma Farroll. “The DECA trip was well organized and kept me on my feet.”
The DECA trip has been a part of South’s business culture since 1995. This year’s trip cost the students $1950 total for the 4-night stay.
“DECA started in 1995, I went 1995, 1999, 2005, 2015, 2023, and 2024,” said Marketing teacher Amy Boscan.
“We went to a Nicks game, toured Madison Square Garden, toured Radio City Music Hall, Times Square, Central Park, Yankee Stadium, Empire State Building, ‘Aladdin’ on Broadway, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, NBC Studios, rode a subway, Washington Park, Hudson Yard, Chelsea Market, FIT, shopping and much more,” Boscan said.
The four days of this trip are packed with many activities and lots of fun. It’s been a trip students have loved and continued to go on throughout the years.
“This trip is a good trip to go on if you’re interested in business or marketing. It gives you a good idea of what it’s actually like,” said Farroll.
A day trip South provides is the trip around St. Louis and to the Arch that students in the class of History of St. Louis get to participate in.
“We went downtown and looked at all the cool things in the city. We got to see the arch and the military museum,” said junior Sam Bohon.
The History of Saint Louis field trip normally takes place in October. In order for students to make it downtown, they are required to take a bus.
“I think students should go on this trip because it is fun and you get to see and be with a bunch of your friends,” Bohon said.
The trip lasts the entire school day.
“I thought the trip was really fun and it’s definitely something everyone should have the chance to go on,” Bohon said.
Journalism teacher Gavin Brady travels to a different city every year with some of his journalism students. They attend the National High School Journalism Conference in November each year. Next year’s conference will be held in Nashville, Tenn. The trip usually costs students around $600, but can cost more if they need to fly.
“The conferences are so fun!” Brady said. “You get to meet journalism students just like you from all over the country, site-see and learn from the pros,” he said.
