Are you passionate about baking, eager to make new friends, or interested in community service? If so, the FACS Club is the perfect place for you! Focusing on Family and Consumer Sciences, the club offers a fun and supportive environment where students can explore their interests in culinary arts, sewing, and teamwork.
Senior Ellen Piotraschke shares her enthusiasm for the club.
“I joined the FACS Club to continue my love for culinary arts, inspired by my amazing experiences with Ms. Petty and Mrs. Dickens. Working on projects like delivering cookies to first responders has shown me the power of kindness. The skills I learn here—cooking, sewing, and collaborating with others—are invaluable for my future. I love working with fellow members from different grades, and this year, I hope to grow our club by welcoming more underclassmen and nurturing future leaders to keep our spirit alive,” Piotraschke said.
Junior Rand Yuwaili, who is actively recruiting new members, said she faced the challenge of increasing participation in the club.
“I worked hard to bring more people into the FACS Club by reaching out and spreading the word. In this club, we experience a strong sense of community and interaction,” Yuwaili said.
Senior Ally Horstmann echoed Piotraschke’s sentiments, sharing how her teachers inspired her to join.
“Leading some of our meetings has helped me improve my public speaking and presentation skills. We’re currently organizing a drive to provide toiletries for Nurses For Newborns, which has really highlighted the importance of helping others. What may seem like a small contribution to us can mean the world to someone else,” Horstmann noted.
Monica Dickens, FACS Club sponsor, added her perspective.
“I’m passionate about empowering students to take charge and support each other. A memorable moment was when students collected over 500 suitcases for a foster home, showcasing the incredible impact we can have together. This year, we aim to encourage leadership among members and launch a toiletry drive for newborns in need. With resources available in Google Classroom, everyone can step up and lead club activities. Collaborating with other organizations, like our upcoming drive with South High, enhances our initiatives,” Dickens said.
