The theatre department has been hard at work (as usual) this year. The season started off featuring the play “Exit the Body” written by playwright Fred Carmichael is about a jewelry theft rendezvous plan that turns disastrous quickly. But now, the theatre department has been hard at work on their new show “Peter and the Starcatcher.”
The story is a prologue to the original story of Peter Pan, giving backgrounds to essential characters such as Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and even Captain Hook’s right-hand man, Mr. Smee. The play features music, choreography, and an amazing and beautiful storyline. The play even features a mermaid number, where cast members sing and dance about the wonders of turning into a mermaid.
“It is definitely my favorite thing to do in the show. It is just so much fun to sing and dance as mermaids. It’s just such a funny song and I really hope that the audience will enjoy the energy we’re putting forth,” said senior Ellie Phillips, who will play Mr. Smee.
Phillips also opened up about how excited she is to play her role this February.
“I have a whole part where I just get to sing and play the ukulele and I am so excited. It’s genuinely been such an amazing experience and I’m so thankful for everyone for making this such a great senior show,” she said.
Sophomore Eddie Huelsebusch plays Peter Pan. He opened up about how excited he was to be a part of the show.
“When I found out I got Peter I was so beyond excited. I was so thankful for this opportunity and everyone has been really supporting and encouraging this whole time,” he said.
Junior Maddie Kessler plays Molly in this production.
“I was so happy, dude,” said Kessler. “I was so excited to play this big part and I was so thankful for this opportunity. I also really love the mermaid song.”
Senior Izzie Rigueiro plays Fighting Prawn in this production, the leader of the mollusks on Mollusk Island.
“I’m having so much fun playing my part. My part basically just says a bunch of Italian food and that’s his lines. It’s supposed to be the mollusk chants and their own language but it’s just funny to be chanting different foods very aggressively,” said Rigueiro.
All four talked about how excited they are for people to come and see this amazing production that so much hard work has been poured into. They are all hopeful for the support of South High to come support the theater department. The show dates for this production are Feb. 5-7. Tickets can be purchased https://psouththeatre.ludus.com/. Also look out for the improv/sketch team Factory Reset’s show that will be performed toward the end of the year, as well as the senior-directed one-act productions that will take place in late April.
