You may have wondered why some South students always show up halfway through the day. Chances are they didn’t oversleep; they might actually be enrolled in South Technical High School.
South Tech has been helping students pursue their interests in an interactive setting since 1967. South Tech has over 20 different programs. Counselor Sara Gerth thinks that South Tech is good for students.
“South Tech offers students hands-on experience in the program that they attend. Many of the programs provide students with industry certifications, free of charge, while also earning high school credits, and sometimes even college credit,” said Gerth.
Students who are enrolled really like the programs as well. Junior Emily Bollenbacher is one of the South students enrolled in the Fire and EMT program.
“South Tech is my favorite part of my day,” she said.
Junior Jacob Bovaconti is enrolled in electronics and robotics. talks about the reason why he likes South Tech.
“My favorite part is being able to do hands-on learning,” he said.
Students also like being able to do something that interests them. Junior Maddie Tepen said she was influenced to do the Fire and EMT program because of her parents.
“I chose the program because I thought it would be good on a college resume and my family works in the medical field,” she said.
Not all the kids know what they want to do but enjoy what they are learning. Bovaconti doesn’t know exactly what he wants to do after high school.
“I enjoy engineering so I probably want to do something with that in the future,” he said.
When it comes to Tepen’s future she also doesn’t exactly know but realizes that what is learning could help her one day.
“I would want to do something with action and helping people,” she said.
The South Tech students complete around half of their specialized classes at South Tech and most finish the day back at South High.
“Some students like that South Tech breaks up their school day a bit, with some of their day at South Tech, and the other half at their home school,” said Gerth.
Most of the South Tech students attend all five days in the mornings. Even though that makes for busy days, all the students really enjoy their program. Bollenbacher said she really likes fire and EMT program.
“My favorite part about South tech is the people in my class. We all are wanting to do the same thing so we understand each other,” she said.
Tepen really likes her teacher in the Fire and EMT program and all the people.
“My favorite part about South tech is being able to see my friends and I really like my teacher,” she said.
Most of the students knew they wanted to go to South Tech when the opportunity came.
“I have been wanting to go to South tech since freshman year,” Bollenbacher said.
Tepen said she recommends South Tech to any student.
“South Tech is great and everyone there is very caring,” Tepen said.
