Margaret Avery–Math

What subject do you teach?“Math – Geometry A.”

What is it like teaching classes here at Parkway South? “Teaching at Parkway South has been great! My students are always ready to learn, and the whole math department has been really helpful and welcoming.”

When you’re not teaching, what do you like to do? “I like to do crafty things of all sorts. I’m also a big fan of musical theater, so I spend a lot of time at the Muny and the Fox theater.”

Where did you receive your teaching education from? “I received my Bachelor’s degree in Math from Truman, and I got my teaching certification at UMSL.”

Why did you want to become a teacher? “I enjoy making things easier for people. A lot of people struggle with math, so I decided to make it my life’s work to make it more understandable for students.”

How did you prepare for the beginning of the school year? “The best thing I did to prepare for the beginning of the school year was to stock up on sleep.”

What is your favorite part of teaching your subject? “My favorite part of teaching math is that there’s an explanation for everything.”

What are you most looking forward to this school year? “I’m most looking forward to building relationships with my students and getting to know them better.”

Have you taught anywhere else before, or is this your first year teaching? If so, where did you teach prior? “I spent the last five years teaching in a little tiny town called Silex, Mo.”

Why did you choose to come to teach at Parkway South? “I grew up in the Parkway area, and I am so glad to be back home doing what I love at a great school!”

If you could teach any other subject, what would you choose and why? “I’d probably teach Culinary Arts if I had to pick something else. I love cooking, although I really hate doing dishes!”

What has been the biggest challenge with teaching? “The biggest challenge has probably been teaching to each individual child. Everyone is at a different level in math, especially with the virtual school last year, so it’s interesting trying to find ways so every student understands and is engaged.”

Who has been your biggest support through the beginning of your teaching journey? “I’m lucky to have had so many big supporters throughout my teaching journey! If I had to pick one here, it would have to be Mrs. Earhart. She has been so great about reaching out and making sure I have everything I need, even if it’s just a laugh.”
