The SNES Classic hit stores Sept.29

One of the hottest tech gifts of 2017 may be a throwback to 1990.  The Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Classic Edition also known as the SNES, has been recently revamped and restocked for the enjoyment of gamers everywhere.

The new SNES comes equipped with a replica of the original controller and an HDMI cable to plug the console directly into your TV. The $80 system generously includes two controllers this time and fits right into the player’s hand, just like last year’s NES model.  A Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro can also be used (each sold separately).

The system comes packaged with an HDMI cable, an AC adapter and one NES Classic Controller, which is patterned after the iconic design of the original NES controller. The console is geared exclusively to classic gaming, so players shouldn’t expect any online connectivity.  The SNES Classic was available in stores starting on Sept. 29 for $79.99, and has sold 1.2 million units since its release..

Just like it did with the NES Classic/Famicom, Nintendo is again opting to do region-specific releases.  The United Kingdom and other territories will get the Super Famicom styling.  It’s the same console, just with some different visual aspects.

The company has said it will revive the NES Classic Edition again next year, and it plans to continue selling their revamped SNES Classic in 2018, too.  The company originally killed off the hit NES Classic Edition with an announcement in April and it had also said that the SNES version, which had already gone up for pre-sale in September,  would not live beyond this year. However, a later announcement took this back and ensured its revival.

Now, the complete list of available games for this SNES include Balloon Fight, Bubble Bobble, Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Final Fantasy, Galaga, Ghosts N’ Goblins, Gradius, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Kirby’s Adventure, Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Man, Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, StarTropics, Super C, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl, The Legend of Zelda, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

“We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The Nintendo Entertainment System: SNES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”
