Parkway’s freshman basketball Team brings the title
The Golden State Warriors just smashed the NBA record for fastest to win 50 games. But closer to home, the Parkway South Freshman basketball is also having a historic season. It’s on a mission to break the school record for games won.
Anyone who’s followed this team on their way to the championship can’t help to notice the effort and tenacity that they’ve have put into their sport. The players, such as Paul Stone, know full well what it takes to be this team.
“To me, as a basketball player this season, it has been very exciting,” said Stone. Being 13-0 has made me realize the potential we have, and hard work that my teammates and I have put into this season. Especially Josh Skidmore who offensively drives our teams to victories. But what stands out to me the most is the dedication of my teammates, and the cooperation that we have shown through the beginning of the season up until to now.”
Unfortunately, the unbeaten streak was broken on February 15th when the freshman team suffered their first loss, losing to Mehlville by a score of 40-38.
But to the team, one loss this doesn’t really mean defeat for them. Their focus is on playing more a little more cautious, while using their abilities as individuals to come together as a team.
For player Josh Skidmore this idea has become even more important. The loss was a blow, but he’s focusing more on how he works with his teammates and what they can do to improve their skills to hopefully kick start another winning streak.
“This team has come along way in how we’ve bonded together,” said Skidmore. “At first we were all just getting used to playing as a team, but now we’ve become more of a family. Especially on are practices in how we bond and help strengthen our skills and become overall a better team.
“But when we are on the court we are able to rely on each other which is why I think we win our games. We don’t just have to rely on one person we can all rely on each other.”
Since the start of the season, Coach Justin Moulder has been teaching his team the skills and fundamentals needed for his team to have a success in the 2015-2016 season. And as shown from their ongoing wins has made this freshman team remember years from now. All because of the support and coaching skills Coach Moulder has put into his well tuned team.”
“From day one the team as put in amazing effort in how they have one games throughout the season, said Coach Moulder. “And even when we had our first loss we managed to keep trying even more, and especially with getting to know each other. To me as a coach, I feel pressure every game. Winning increases the pressure, but the pressure is what pushes you to work harder and try and find ways to continue to succeed. My job as a coach is to prepare my kids to be successful, on the court and moving forward in their lives. Hopefully they will see that hard work and preparation are the keys to that success.”
From the start of the season players have become better and better as they’ve had more playing time. But one player has achieved more goals on this team than some of the team ever has. Rowan Collins has again and again showed why he was picked on the team, and of course why he belongs.
“My teammates and I have beaten obstacles that we have faced, and strengthened our skills to become a better team and win more games,” said Collins. “This especially has come into play after we won in double overtime that to me is when I realized the full potential of our team in basketball. But one of the reasons why I chose basketball is because of how it’s so fast paced and requires a lot of endurance compared to some other sports such as baseball. But so who showed me why this sport is so great is Greg Rollins who defensively makes our team what it is at times and is a true role model on what we should do. , Unfortunately we lost one of our last games, and the reason I think we lost is because we got too cocky with our undefeated title, but now I think we are taking basketball more seriously and preparing more than we ever have before.Overall though to me the most important thing on this team is my teammates. Because they are the ones who make me push through boundaries, and become a the player I know I can be to achieve a great season.”
