Denver Broncos
Super Bowl 2016
On January 15, 1967, one of the biggest competitions in sports history kicked off for the first time when the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.
Fifty games later, we have a five-time league MVP facing off against a team with the second best record in NFL history. However, experience reigned supreme when the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Panthers fans around the nation were horrified as they watched their season MVP Cam Newton get sacked seven times as their second loss of the season slowly crept up on them in front of more than 110 million people.
Nevertheless, both teams put up fantastic defensive performances in the final game of the season. While it wasn’t enough to win Carolina its first Super Bowl, the Panthers’ defense forced the Broncos to make only 11 first downs while gaining 194 yards on offense. This performance set the record for the fewest offensive yards by a Super Bowl victor ever.
Senior Tino Bosnjak couldn’t decide whose defense was better during the championship game.
“I would have to say the Panthers’ but the Broncos did really well too to make sure that the Panthers weren’t able to bring it back,” he said.
On the other hand, Newton completed 18 out of 41 passes and was sacked 7 times. His offense averaged 4.2 yards per play and finished with 315 total. That’s pretty good considering they were playing against “the greatest defense to ever play the game. Ever.” according to Broncos linebacker, Brandon Miller.
“It’s a bold statement but top to bottom, we have the greatest talent – from rushers to safeties to linebackers. Better than anybody’s ever done it,” Miller went on to say.
While that is just an opinion, that was a fact for Super Bowl 50. Their performance caused the Panthers to throw an interception and turn it over four times. This was thanks to the performances of DeMarcus Ware, Calvin Harris, and Von Miller.
The voters also acknowledged the 2011 Defensive Rookie of the Year’s performance by selecting Von Miller as the MVP of Super Bowl 50.
Senior Justin Eads definitely thinks that Miller deserved it. When asked he said “Heck yeah! He had Cam Newton tied down!”
However, regardless of the outcome, not everyone predicted Miller. A lot of NFL fans thought season MVP, Newton, to come out on top. However that dream was knocked out of viewers minds early in the first quarter when Malik Jackson recovered Newton’s fumble in the Panthers’ end zone.
While the lack of dabs was a clear sign that Newton wasn’t his usual self, Newton definitely exposed himself in the postgame interview.
After being asked if their was anything particular he remembered about the game, he said the Broncos just played better, he apologized, then left. It’s understandable why he was upset yet he has received massive criticism from the media.
“I’m a sore loser,” he said. “Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser.”
It’s anyone’s guess that Panthers’ fans across the nation are crushed, but at least they had the halftime show to take them out of their misery for a few minutes…or maybe it made it worse.
The halftime show for Super Bowl 50 featured Coldplay alongside Bruno Mars and Beyonce. The 12 minute performance had to cram multiple hits from all three superstars and the outcome was mixed between viewers.
The show began with Coldplay, then transitioned to Bruno, who then passed it on to Beyonce who stole the show by performing her brand new song “Formation.” The spotlight bounced back and forth between the stars after that but while some were delighted to see such a unique collaboration, others took offense.
Social media praised Beyonce, however some people think her performance was completely out of line. Not only do people believe she ditched her “strong woman” image with her outfit and dances, but they also think her song was “a slap in the face to law enforcement.”
However people have agreed that those particular viewers overreacted. Saturday Night Live even took it upon themselves to mock their reaction with a skit called “The Day Beyonce Turned Black.”
The whole situation has appeared to blow over and people have let it go. With no hard feelings, now everyone can just relax and agree that it’s pretty great that a legend was able to come out on top.
