Workers prepare to remove the old turn field so they can install the new field.

Have you ever suffered from a turf burn? If yes, well that will not be the case anymore when Parkway South finishes installing new turf on the stadium field.

“The current rubber is being removed. We will get new rubber with our field. Something new to our field will be the addition of a pad under the turf to help make the field softer and safer,” said Athletic Director Pat Burns.

And for the athletes out there playing a fall or spring sport, you now don’t have to worry about falling on the new turf and scraping your skin. However, the track surrounding the turf field is not being replaced.

Building Manager Lisa Marcinkiewicz said the new turf will cost approximately $650,000 total to get installed. South isn’t the only high school getting new turf, either. Each Parkway high school will have new turf installed by the end of the school year, costing the district $2.6 million total.

The money for the new turf came from the bond issue, Prop. S, which was passed November 6, 2018. The bond issue authorized Parkway to spend $110 million to use on building repairs and technology.

According to Burns, new turf was definitely needed.

“It has been almost 9 years since we have gotten new turf,” he said.

Marcinkiewicz said the turf project will be completed soon.

“The project started Nov. 19. The completion date is all dependent on the weather we get in December,” she said.

The sport who will be using the new field first will be girls soccer. Senior Jordyn Haddrill is a midfielder for the girls soccer team. She said she is looking forward to playing on the new turf.

“I feel great about the new turf. The old turf had lots of patches on it,” she said.
