Juniors Adam Heskett and Emma Jenkins practice their swing dancing at Casa Loma Ballroom.

Swing dancing was most popular in the 1920s but junior Adam Heskett is bringing it back to 2019.

He and girlfriend Emma Jenkins are regulars at Casa Loma Ballroom.

“I’ve been doing this since freshman year after hearing about it from people at my church. I decided to try it out and ended up really liking it. I have never liked dancing of any kind before,” Heskett said.

Some of the more fun aspects of swing dancing is the partner work, he said.

“My favorite part of swing dancing, and the main reason why I have stuck with it for so long is because I think lifting people and throwing them around is fun to do,” Heskett said.

Swing dancing has been around since the 1920’s. It became popular when the swing style of jazz music was created in the 1920’s. Since swing dancing has been around for so many years there is a unofficial dress code that everyone follows when attending swing dancing.

“Normally men will wear dress pants and a button down, and then the women will wear either a flowy skirt or a dress,” Heskett said.

Casa Loma features many different bands and types of music for different styles of dance. Casa Loma is by Cherokee street and is open until midnight.

“We normally go when there is a certain band that we enjoy. They normally perform once or twice a month, we try to make it every time they perform because it’s something fun my girlfriend and I to do,” he said.

Junior Emma Jenkins joins her boyfriend on Friday and Saturday nights.

“ I love getting to hangout with Adam. We always have a great time and I feel like it has definitely made us a lot closer,” Jenkins said.

There are many aspects that go into swing dancing. Many people that start swing dancing like the fast pace dancing and all of the flips.

‘When dancing my favorite part is when Adam has to lift me up. It makes me feel like I am flying,” Jenkins said.
