It all started three years ago with three guys who had decided to form a band. The only problem was they had no drummer. So, with no previous experience and no knowledge of the drums, math teacher Staci Noyes stepped up to the challenge. She knew that if she wanted to spend more time with her husband, the lead singer, that she would have to join the band.

Noyes had to research on how to play the drums so she took some lessons from School of Rock and watched plenty of youtube videos of famous drummers, to get it down right.

They are called the NoYes band and it is made up of about seven people.

She said that she likes the drums because she can see math concepts while playing.

“I especially see the relation with the drum rhythms because it’s all about counting. I enjoy the drums because I find it very relatable to math,” said Noyes.

Sophomore Shayne Auer found it very interesting to learn that his Ac Lab teacher was a drummer as well.

“I am surprised she plays the drums because she seems like a quieter person,” said Auer.

Noyes colleague math teacher Anne Erehart, agrees.

“I was surprised when I first heard she played the drums. Playing the drums is a great skill to have that is pretty cool. She is amazing and has a great band and is a secret rockstar,” said Erehart.

Noyes has played at many of places around St. Louis and has played anything from The Beatles to Justin Timberlake to Green Day.

“We have performed at the Sky Music Lounge, at tons of corporate events for my husband, at bars, and other venues around town. We play two times a month, but we are on break for the holidays. We will start back up on March 17,” said Noyes.

However, Noyes is not the only one in her family to take interest in music. Along with her and her husband, her three kids all have some kind of passion for a musical instrument.

“My daughter and my son are both very talented piano players and my other son likes to dabble with the guitar. They love to come see us play and they have been to most of our gigs. My sons even had us play at one of their fraternity get-togethers,” Noyes said.

Senior Emily Fitzgerald said she was amazed to know that her Trigonometry teacher was a musician on the side.

“It honestly shocked me. You don’t expect your math teacher to be in a band, but it is just really cool to know,” said Fitzgerald. “ She is just a very fun person and she has a lot of energy. I would love to go see her play sometime.”

Noyes said that she usually doesn’t share this side of her life with her students, but once she knew that they found it so cool, she decided to tell them.

She knows from first hand experience how it is to learn a new instrument so she knows just how hard she has to work to perfect her talent.

“You are never to old to learn, but it is harder than it looks,” said Noyes.
