Homecoming Poll

The Polls segment in this issue will be homecoming.  Homecoming has been around as long as High School itself.  There is always a story- big or small to tell about Homecoming.  More often than not these stories are about a regretted event or how something went far from according to plan.  Some people love it, some people hate it.  That’s why it can be such a good topic to read and to write about.

Homecoming always consists of a game and a dance.  The homecoming court is introduced.  The court is a few pairs of male and female who were nominated to be the queen and king of homecoming.  There are also homecoming parades, which include the school’s marching band and various groups and clubs from within the school.  Schools also have spirit week during the week of homecoming, which is a week where each day in the week has a different theme to dress up and represent, such as patriotism.  Usually during this week there will be pep rallies held by the school.  These will include the introduction of the court, games, and presentations from groups and clubs.

Through interviews, it seems as though most people like homecoming and feel as though it is a good thing to have.  The majority of people do plan on going.  There are some people though, that openly state that they don’t feel the need to go to homecoming as it is not their kind of thing.

“I have never gone to Homecoming, and I don’t think I’ll end up going” said Parkway South Senior Jackie Gao.

Another senior, Andrew Dreste said “I’m going to  go to the game and the dance,”

These quotes show that there is a fine line in between the people that do and don’t attend as both sides are fairly open with their decisions.

Exactly half of the answers from the poll showed that people do like and dislike homecoming.  While this is different from the interviews, where most people stated that they like homecoming, it makes sense considering the numbers of people actually claiming that they would go, as many interviewees claimed they wouldn’t be going to homecoming.

In regards to the poll, every single interviewee stated that they think that you should ask in person when you ask somebody to go to homecoming.  It also shows that 100% of those that took the poll have never rejected anybody or have ever been rejected, which is pretty good because nobody really likes being in that situation.  Another thing learned from the poll is that 100% of those polled stated that they have gone to homecoming, but only 50% stated that they actually enjoy homecoming.  This makes sense as many interviewees did state that they planned to attend, they weren’t sure if they wouldn’t want to spend the night doing something else.

So it is apparent even though Homecoming is meant as a way to get together and have fun, it is clear that some people just see it as another chore or social event just to be dragged out to.  For some, money is a part of homecoming that isn’t much to look forward to.  While it is smaller than scale to things such as prom- it still isn’t free.  Some people only do the minimum initial $15 entrance fee, and some people go much farther than that.

There are also a good amount of mishaps that have happened at Homecoming that turn out to be some pretty good stories.  Even teachers have some experiences to share about what happened at Homecoming during their time at High School.  Mr. Jennings is one of these lucky people with an experience to share.

“There was this girl a grade above me, my neighbor.  I didn’t even want to go to homecoming but she asked me to go with her while she was driving me to school.” Said Mr. Jennings.

To conclude, there are many things going on at homecoming- before, during, and after the game.  While these aren’t for everyone, it is still good to know what is going on around the school.
